What is Coaching?

During the past decade, executive coaching and executive coaches have moved firmly into the mainstream as major corporations have recognized the value of leadership development through one-on-one interaction with an objective third party. The confidential, collaborative process of executive coaching delivers a focus that cannot be matched by other forms of organizational support.

In the past, hiring an executive coach was often perceived as a tool solely to correct underperformance. While an executive coach can certainly help CEOs and other business leaders ramp up performance and capability, executive coaching is now more widely used as a support mechanism for top producers. In fact, a recent survey revealed that 86 percent of companies have used coaching to sharpen the skills of individuals who were identified as future organizational leaders.

How does coaching maximize potential? By providing confidential feedback and guidance in real time. Working with an experienced coach, business leaders enhance their effectiveness, address whole-life issues, improve their interpersonal skills, develop a more productive management style, establish priorities and learn how to cultivate a positive work environment. At a simpler level, many executives find they benefit from receiving any feedback at all, because despite the increasing need for developmental feedback as one climbs the corporate ladder, the frequency with which it is dispensed typically decreases. This often results in a plateau in terms of critical interpersonal and leadership skills. A coach will provide candid, unbiased feedback to help executives excel in their roles.

At an even more basic level, many executives simply benefit from receiving any feedback at all. As individuals are elevated to the executive level, development feedback becomes increasingly important, less frequent, and less reliable. As a result, many executives plateau in critical interpersonal and leadership skills.
